Joanna

Strength:

Confidence

Explaining each term of CAL, CAI and CBI is clear.

Good PPT design

Weakness:

Giving the article in advance would be better.

Question:

What is the base of choosing participants in this paper?

For Joanna

Strength:

1.     Good eye contact.

2.     I like slide 7. Could you teach me how to make the circle keep moving?

3.     The software in the last slide is funny.

4.     The content of this study is explained well.

5.     The third opinion in your personal reflection is insightful.

Weakness:

1.     Pronunciation : Some of the last syllable of the words are missing , such as assisted. sentence. integrated. stated .increased .paths researchers and understandable. On the other hand, the pronunciation of Likert .southern[ˋsʌðɚn]. abstract and mechanism need to be aware of.

2.     The second picture of slide 29 is not clear.

3.     In slide 13. 15 and 16, you introduced the concept of abstract words. I wonder why you picked these words because you used different words in different slides.

4.     Typing errors:  The first line in slide 29 is probably not a sentence. The second sentence in slide 29 :It should be “have” not “has.”

Question:

This study investigated CAI foreign language abstract word learning and provided some suggestions toward the users of the abstract word learning system. In this study, did it provide some views about enhancing the learning of those who don’t have a computer? Or when is the best time to apply CAI to increase students' performance?

My dear Eleanor,

Really appreciate your feedback!
Good peer review!

Love you...Sweetie...

Teresa

Strength

Pretty and hot today!

Clear explanation for the term of CAL.

Slide7, your design is soooo cool!! Could you please teach how to make it?

Slide 14, good design but Peter’s funny face, haha…

Weakness

Kind of nervous, and the REAL cell phone did RING!! J

Slide 27, the first suggestion, the word “include” you read that as “increase”!

Question

In the study, the research period is “2 hours”, do you think the time is suitable for a “research” or too short to make the study reliable?

Dear Mindy,

Good question!

Teresa
Strength:
The final slide (the animation) was impressive~! You've got to teach me how to do that!! Please~

Weakness:
I think someone asked you something like: "They did not mention blah blah blah...". The correct response should be "No" but you said "Yes"... If you say "yes" that means the article DID mention whatever it was. But I believe you meant the article DID NOT mention that... I'm babbling... Do you know what I'm trying to say??? :p

Question:
Did the journal actually provide the software or any indication as to how to gain access to that software?? I'm truly interested!!
For Joanna!!!!!

Strength: 1. The explanation is good.
               2. Hard-working about the crazy talk.....(proud of you)

Weakness: 1. Pronunciation problems (as 大姐 mentioned)
                 2. Little nervous

Question:
We should consider the threats to internal validity, in your opinion
how to choose suitable participants? why?
Baby Joanna~

Strength
charming voice
beautiful ppt
clear explanation

Weakness
Actually, the oral presentation skills need to be improved!

Sometimes, you may say "maybe", it seems that you are not sure about the issue or topic.

Also, there are some pronunciation problems that you may need to notice about, such as "cognitive", "understandable", "validity".

In slide 21, "that" you said "this", "those" you said "these";in slide 27, "included" you said "increase", I think that you're too nervous to pronunce them wrong.

Question
In your future study, would you use CAL for your study? Why?

Presenter

Joanan

- Excellent ppt with graphical illustrations and explanations

- You spoke with confidence.

Weakness:

- Practice a bit more on some pronunciations as those are the only flaws in your presentation. ^^

Question:

- Do you think if the researcher extended the software learning hours (2 hours) a bit longer, or allow free “play with it” sessions, would the children learn better and hence more significances would show?

Presenters

Joanna

Strength

You looks great!

Eye contact

Great ppt design

Explain the CAL at the beginning

In slide 10 to 12, I like the picture of scroll. Good!

In slide 22, you showed the Likert scale.

In slide 15, I like the design.

Weakness

In slide 8, you put a period

In slide 11, the year is 1987, but you said 1687

Question

In slide 21, the achievement test shows us that students can recognize the meaning of picture and choose the right picture to match the sentence, in your opinion do you think after using CAL, the students will only know the meaning of abstract words but they don’t know how to use those abstract words to create other sentences?

Comments for Joanna

Strength

1.          explain the details

Question:
Could you explain what drills is ?

Hello, dear all. Thanks for your suggestions and comments. I will try my best to answer your question. J

For dear Abi:

According to the literature of child development, children at the age of 11 are believed to be ready for abstract thinking. Brown (1987) claimed that around the age of eleven is an important stage for children’s mental and cognitive development. At this age, children begin to form abstract concepts. Their ability to learn at this age is better than at a later age. In addition, Shr and Chen (1999) indicated that sixth graders should be presented with more complex content or language concepts to help form their abstract conceptualizations. Therefore, abstract word learning at the elementary stage is necessary and significant.

For dear Eleanor:

Thank you, dear Eleanor. You pointed out an important problem, in this study, the researcher did not mention if the students without computers, what can they do. In this study, it just mentioned that students can access the learning system at any time and from anywhere via an Internet connection, and only a web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explore or Netscape is needed. There is no need to install other software. However, CAI is a kind of teaching skill, it can be applied to any classes for teacher. Utilizing computers in all subjects has been a primary goal for Ministry of Education in Taiwan and CAI is now available for most teachers and students.

For dear Mindy:

Yes, I think it may be too short to have the reliability. But, in my opinion, the researcher focused on the learning system. She wanted to know if the system has the efficiency for students’ learning so she took a short period to test students’ learning performance in these two groups. However, these two groups have the same teaching goal and same English teacher and same content. The most different is that the experimental group uses computers. However, before the onset of the experiment, the computer instructor provided 2 hours of computer instruction to the students of the experimental group in order to ensure that students were familiar with the operation of the system but did not include additional experience with the target word.

For dear Alison:

This journal was in 2002 and the learning system was designed by the researcher (maybe…because it didn’t mention…sorry). Before presented this paper, I tried to find out the website for you, but sorry I couldn’t…>_< However, there are lots of CAI materials in the market or cram schools, such as Joy, Giraffe, if you are interested, you can surf the Internet. It depends on how you use it. ^_^

For dear Peter:

You are right. We should consider the “maturation” if the participants were young children. But some researches aim for studying children’s performance, it had better to have the pilot study before. For me, the participants must be capable to be tested because that we can increase the study’s validity, so maybe elder will be more suitable.

For baby Catherine:

You know that I have lots of ideas and thoughts about my study. At first, I certainly considered CAI as my research target but after deliberated thought, I hesitated. Because I must consider many variables and internal validity, such as my participants, the software choosing and so on. But I will keep studying these field’s papers to expand my views.

For dear Trista:

The computer instructor provided 2 hours of computer instruction to the students of the experimental group in order to ensure that students were familiar with the operation of the system but did not include additional experience with the target word.

For dear Livia:

Actually this study did not provide a very completed findings, I think it’s rough. In the slide 25, the result presented that experimental and control groups’ difference. In these two groups, the researcher used post test scores minus pre test scores and got the result. This result indicated that on average students in the experimental group significantly increased. However, students in the control group on average did not achieve the 0.05 significant levels.

For dear Clement:

I think this study result was expected in advance. People usually interested in new things and children are no exception. But if the researcher extended the time it will certainly help children to learn better. But I do not totally agree if the researcher designed the free “play with it “ sessions, because it’s not easy to manage themselves for young children.

For dear Emily:

Yes, in my opinion, this abstract word learning system is only training students’ ability of recognize abstract words. However, in this study, the researcher emphasized the important of words’ function. Besides, the researcher gave us lots of the background and literature review about the vocabulary. She said that vocabulary is the foundation of language learning.

For dear Allen:

Yes, because in this study, these two groups’ participants are similar and I think it won’t change the result.

For dear Alice:

As possible as you can! But the designer should update the system frequently in order to enlarge learner’s knowledge and motivation.

For dear Eunice:

Drill means you practice a lot and a lot! Traditional teaching, teacher may constantly uses role-play to let students practice. Same word, sentence, conversation, grammar structure ….etc. The purpose is that let student be familiar with what they learn. However, CAI provides students an individual environment to practice in anywhere.
