What is Research Methodology?

Simple!

" How you are gonna do what you are gonna do! "

Some of my graduate students are thinking about submitting their proposals next semester

but they are not quite sure about the research design.

Today I invite 麗秋老師 from 逢甲大學 to talk about principles involved in designing and conducting studies.

I believe that students got better understandings  of their rsearch framework after the seminar.

At the beginning of this semester, I was trying to find my research topic; finally I decided to study the students’ perceptions in evaluation. Then I was trying to figure out the procedures of my study, in fact I did not know how to do and what to do. At April 13, teacher Teresa invited 麗秋老師 from 逢甲大學 to teach us methodology, and teacher 麗秋 pointed out my errors and made me realize that what I should to do is to figure out what do you want to do, what do you want to know in your study, also you should be well prepared when you are going to have a meeting with your advisor, tell him/her what’s your plan, and your advisor will give you some suggestions. You are not supposed to ask your advisor what you should do. This is the first thing I should work on.

After the class, teacher Teresa asked us three questions:

1.      What you are gonna do?

2.      How you are gonna do?

3.      Think of your research question, the purpose of your study.

And here is my answer:

Many studies have suggested that teachers can use peer evaluation to improve student’s achievement, because they considered that using peer evaluation could encourage students to learn deeper. But I have a question in my mind which is peer evaluation could help students learn deeper then how about self evaluation and teacher evaluation? Perhaps self and teacher evaluation could also help student learn more. So the purpose of my study is to investigate the student’s perception toward teacher, self and peer evaluation in English oral class. The participants in the study will be the college students in Chao Yang University of Technology. The data are collected by questionnaires which are exploring students’ perceptions toward teacher, self and peer evaluation, and students’ evaluation sheets are also collected and analyzed.

Now I am still looking for the questionnaire that can be used in my stud

Andrew’s Reflection after Professor Li’s lecture

After the lecture, I really want to give a lot of appreciation. Besides, I have refreshed the whole view on my research, such as followed

Problems of My Research

1. Variables

Through the lecture, I was aware of the variables necessary in my study. They include the independent variables, the instruction of the learning strategies and the students’ gender. Also, the dependent variables, students’ learning motivation, students’ learning achievement, and the students’ strategies use.
2. Strength

     1) Oxford’s SLII will be the questionnaire used to certify the various strategy       uses of students’. However, I could not answer immediately toward what the teacher asked me how to classify the level of students’ motivation. So, I still need to survey the chart for it. Several journals about students’ learning motivation have been surveyed; however, it is not enough.

2) SPSS version 12 will be used to analysis the data collected.

3) Think aloud protocol will be a supplemental tool to strengthen my questionnaire.
3. Weakness
Though, I have found the variables and set the two main fundamental theories, there are some weaknesses found in the lecture.
         1) Lack one of the two main fundamental theories, the motivation chart.

2) I am not sure the time when it is appropriate to conduct the qualitative part, the classroom observation.

3) Neither do I know the right time to do my pilot study, though I have done it.

4) The procedure of my research is vague. Because mine is a mixed research, including the quantitative and qualitative researches, it’s hard for me to determine which part I should go first, though I already found the float chart.
          5) The problem about the equivalence between my three groups of participants.

All in all, after the public discussion in front of the whole class, it exposed my weakness there. Nevertheless, it gave a chance to re-think my research and thus to have the clearer picture of my whole research. I want to owe my progress to both Teacher Li and my dear teacher, Teresa. I appreciate the opportunity you gave to me, not only for this time, you know it.
