What is the meaning of unnatural teaching style ? |

First of all, I really appreciate you guys’ comments for me, and I’ll try to improve myself again and again! Here is the table that I tried to reply the questions completely, please tell me if you still need the detailed information, thx a lot!

My answers |
Ilisa |
On, slide 11, who are the 3 experienced TAs, native speakers or nonnative speakers? |
We could see the summary of participants on Table 1 on P.437 of the paper. About teaching experience, Mary, John and Camille were experienced teacher, Steve and Lena were novice teacher. Otherwise, Mary, Steve and John were native speakers in English, Lena was German, and Camille’s first language was neither English nor German but she had live in Germany for more than 10 years. |
Irene |
According to the presentation, you mention that it’s a qualitative research though why did it still apply a questionnaire. What the content of the questionnaire are talk about? |
Actually, there are a lot of methods of data collections for qualitative research. According to the “Designing Qualitative Research” (Marshall and Rossman, 1999), we can use the primary methods for doing qualitative research, as participation, observation, in-depth interviewing and review of documents. About the secondary methods, there are life histories & Narrative inquiry, historical analysis, film, video & photograph, kinesics, proxemics, unobtrusive measures, questionnaire & survey, projective techniques & psychological testing. So we could make sure that the questionnaire is one of the methods of data collections for qualitative research. Moreover, we could see the questionnaire on P.450 of this research paper. The researcher introduced the content of the questionnaire on P.439. There were five major sets of open-ended questions. They were questions dealt with personal information, questions about relevant teacher training coursework, the perception of their students’ abilities, the teaching philosophy and departmental policies. |
Patty |
1. Can you explain the meanings of the numbers for table on slide 14? 2. In the methodology part, you mentioned that there were five foreign language courses, which are these five languages? |
1. The numbers for table on slide 14 was counted from the total number of slide 13. For example, there were five “T” s for CM/ AV(the abbreviation of classroom management and administrative vocabulary), they were 14, 14, 2, 6 and 4, and the total number for these five “T”s was 40, so we could say the total number of classroom management and administrative vocabulary was 40. 2. All of these five foreign language courses were beginning German language courses. The researcher described that on the abstract part on P. 435. |
Leya |
What is the first & second observation mean? |
The researcher described the classroom observation of the procedure of the research method on P.439 of paper. Each class was observed twice during weeks 10 and 11 of a 16-week first-semester course. The classes met five times a week for 50 mins each. This project focused on the identification of teacher talked by native and nonnative teaching assistants in communicative German language classrooms. |
Lynn |
Is it the qualitative research? |
Yes, of course. I guess you have the same question with Irene, so I would like to talk about the part of questionnaire again. |
Paulinna |
What is the meaning of unnatural teaching style ? |
Unnatural teaching style which is not like or representing nature, the participants may did the abnormal acts for the study in the short period to make the results that they wanted. That is they may not did the “real” ones in this study. That is the reson why the researcher suggested that the longitudinal study could prevent unnatural teaching style. |

Sorry, there are some problems in my first attachment so that I post the commends again ><

The age of your participants is quite different from the research. Do you think that is a problem to apply i- move to the older learners? |
Because this research is based on primary and high school students. And the finding shows that the result is positive. However, my participants are undergraduate students; I think that won’t be a problem for them. Practice makes it perfect! |
Ilisa |
Where are the answers to the research questions 1-4? |
You can check answers with the link below: Q1. On Page 38 (5.1) Q2. On Page 46 (5.2) Q3. On Page 56 (5.3) Q4. On Page 69 (5.4) |
Irene |
What is pedagogy mean? Could you give a detail explanation? Just like you said, the technical problem is high. Why they choose K-12 as their participants? |
1. Pedagogy means teaching method. Such as we have English pedagogy. 2. You miss the words: “compared with my experiment”, mine has lower technical problem. Just practice then you will find that is easy to control with multimedia operation. Practice makes it perfect, just like the experiment conducted in Australia, the kids finally finds that they are motivated with this course. |
Patty |
Do you think it is enough for only one case study in your own research? |
Any research has its own limitations. Because I just can find a class to conduct this research. Compared with Apple Company Australia, they have financial support; however, I do not. So, this is my limitations. If I have chance, I will conduct this kind of research in my future career. |
Leya |
What is the resource of the study? Did the researcher mention about the content of CDs? |
The resources including CDs and some paper materials. Yes, you can see the links below at the appendix part 1, 2, and 3. |
Lynn |
You should find out the result. Q: Cold you explain what is the procedure of semi-structure of this study? |
1. Yes, I already find out the result. 2. Semi-structured observation: it means that teachers are the observers. 3. semi-structured interview: it means that before we starting to interview our participants, we will have already set up our topics; however, during the interview, any questions can be asked during the interview. |
Paulinna |
What are you observing in your own study? The interaction between students? How? |
I will do the students’ online iMovie’s sections records on our wiki platform and I will try to keep recording the update links with their iMovies online. |
Jeffery |
What is the relationship in slide #19 between this research and your research? |
Because we all use “iMovie” to apply to our experiment. The authors use Apple’s product – iMovie to make a video, and I use Zimmer Twins website’s iMovie to create a video as well. I just make a comparison. Our mission is almost the same. |
I have e-mailed to the authors and hre is the link with the result:

My answers—Part 2
Betty |
The name of the subjects is real or makeup? |
Actually, it didn’t mention that the name of the participants in this study is pseudonym, we may say the researcher used the true name of the participants. |
Jeffery |
This paper used German as a foreign language (GFL). Does the result of this adapt to your research? |
I chose this paper to present because of this research focus on the second language learning. Moreover, it offered the completed methodology of qualitative research. |
Jenny |
1. Do you personally agree with teaching with native language only? Why or why not? 2. Do you think the number of participants in this study is sufficient, considering the different background of the participants? 3. Do you think the presence of the researcher in the classrooms would affect the behavior of the participants? |
1. In my teaching experience, I suggested the answer is based on the level of the learners. For beginners, it may cause learning obstacle and anxious of language learning; however, it could be better for advanced learners to improve their ability. 2. Of course, the amount of participants would be the largest limitation for qualitative research. However, I think this study is tried to consider the different background of the participants and research the differences of them. 3. I think you got the reason that the researcher worried about the “unnatural teaching style” in this study. And he also suggested that the longitudinal study could prevent unnatural teaching style and thus offer broader insights into this research topic. |
Andrew |
1. How to use the digital-/ techno- data in your research? 2. Any other way to record the data from the classroom observation? |
1. I may consider and use the procedures of the methodology of this paper, including classroom observation, interview and questionnaire. 2. There are two ways to record the data from the classroom observation, the micro cassette recorder and a small digital recorder. |
Stan |
What is the contribution of this research since you didn’t mentioned in your presentation? |
The researcher didn’t mention about the contribution of this research, but in my opinion, this study offered the statements that foreign language teachers switch between the target language and English in beginning-level foreign language classrooms. |
York |
What is unnatural teaching style? |
Due to I’ve answered the same question for Paulinna, please don’t mind I answered the same one from it.
