How to Give a Successful Thesis Proposal Defense

*The thesis proposal defense should be a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes in length, so as to allow ample time for discussion within the one hour period.  A rough breakdown of the time allotment should be as follows:

         Introduction                            (3 minutes)

         Review of Literature                (5 minutes)

         Objectives                               (3 minutes)

         Methods                                  (9 minutes)

Note:

The discussion of methods should take up close to one half of your presentation time. It is here that faculty will be able to provide you with constructive feedback, as well as judge your readiness to conduct the project.

*The oral presentation

      - conciseness and clarity of the presentation

Irene

1.      How many participants will be conducted in your research?

2.      Why you choose NTIT as your target and base on what criteria?

3.      How long will the interview take?

First, thanks for pointing out my mistake of wrong pronunciation on “further”, I’ll pay attention about that.^^

1. There will be about 15 participants in my research; however, I have to ensure the teachers who have the working connecting with the NEST, they will be the participants, too.

2. For such a historic school as NTIT (they held the 90th anniversary for school), I believe it should be included a lot of educational culture in it, and it is the key point of my research.

3. The first in-depth interview will be about 2 hours, and the followed-up interview and member checking will take more time than the first interview.

Jeffrey

1. In slide # 21, the details of the participants include personal information, workplace background, working items, and working experiences. The working experiences means that how many years they have worked or how many different jobs they have done?

2. I have no idea about the parts of data analysis in slides # 25 and 26.

1. The working experiences means that how many years they have worked in NTIT.

2. They are the way for analyzing the qualitative approach for my research, and I tried to explain what parts of the interview and questionnaire will be analyzed for each research question.

1.      What’s the standard for choosing the participants?

2.      In slide 23, why did you divided into three group?

1. As what I mentioned on slide 21, for such a historic school as NTIT (they held the 90th anniversary for school), I believe it should be included a lot of educational culture in it, and it is the key point of my research.

2. The three groups are made for the data analysis of the questionnaires; I will analyze the data with the three different groups.

York

This is an interesting topic. However, since this is a qualitative research; therefore, we could not found large number of participants in this study. Is it enough for you to only use one foreign teacher in your study? Do you think the result of the study will be valid?

For a qualitative research, the point is how to make a deep research that is why there is the limitation for the number of participants. Therefore, for improve the internal validity, I will also did the questionnaires of the administration staffs for the NEST, it would offer more viewpoints and validity for my research.

Sadia

I have no idea about “NEST”, could you explain it here?

As I mentioned in slide 4, NEST means “native English-speaking teacher”.

Ilisa

1. I cannot understand how she analyzes the data.

2. According to your deep understanding toward native-speaking teacher, do you think they should take Chinese culture classes before they start their English teaching in Taiwan?

1. They are the way for analyzing the qualitative approach for my research, and I tried to explain what parts of the interview and questionnaire will be analyzed for each research question.

2. You really offer an interesting viewpoint for this research. I wish I could put this in the conclusion of my research. Of course, the culture classes are the effective ways to reduce the culture shock.

Patty

What are the criteria for choosing only one NEST in the research?

For a qualitative research, the point is how to make a deep research that is why there is the limitation for the number of participants. Question

As I know, most foreign teachers in the collage are part-time.

The foreign teacher whom you will choose for your participants is a part-time or full-time teacher? If it is possible, do you think the full-time teacher will more appropriate for your research?

Comments

May use more of her own words.

For Betty ONLY~ Name Questions My answers Betty As I know, most foreign teachers in the collage are part-time. The foreign teacher whom you will choose for your participants is a part-time or full-time teacher? If it is possible, do you think the full-time teacher will more appropriate for your research? There is no full-time foreign teacher in NTIT now. However, you mentioned the key point in my research; I will try to do my best. On the other side, the reason for choosing part-time foreign teachers in school would be one of the research questions in my study.

Dear Betty,

Late homework...
