How to Give a Successful Thesis Proposal Defense

*The thesis proposal defense should be a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes in length, so as to allow ample time for discussion within the one hour period. A rough breakdown of the time allotment should be as follows:

− Introduction (3 minutes)

− Review of Literature (5 minutes)

− Objectives (3 minutes)

− Methods (9 minutes)

Note:

The discussion of methods should take up close to one half of your presentation time. It is here that faculty will be able to provide you with constructive feedback, as well as judge your readiness to conduct the project.

Since this is a difficult thesis at the beginning, you did it and conquered the problem. That’s good for you! I think this is a great method for students to acquire listen and reading abilities. If I’m of your class, I definitely attracted by this course. She clearly pointed out the problem of this research field. Moreover, I think it makes a significant contribution to teaching area.

Surely, she shows a significant and updates literature of her field from slide 15 to 19.

Yes. It’s a clear introduction in the background of this area (using multimedia material in teaching)

I’m not sure. Crystal choose imovie to be the multimedia material in class to test whether it can increase student’s motivation, however there are many kinds of multimedia material you cannot just use one of the multimedia material and said using multimedia material in teaching will increase student’ motivation.

Yes, in slide 9, 10, 11, the research questions she proposed showed significance of whether multimedia material affects EFL learner’s learning motivation.

Yes. Nowadays, it is an e-world, multimedia material must be a need for the future teaching.

Yes. From her well-prepared introduction and literature review, I can tell that she is familiar with significant literature in her field.

Yes. I think that 55 participants and the duration lasts 3 months will be adequate to provide valid experimental data.

Yes. She prepared 2 kinds of questionnaire to conduct the research and will interview the participants after the study.

Yes, the researcher combines the English teaching and technology in her further research. I think it will be the trend in the future and the research will be a significant contribution for the area of the language teaching.

Questions	1. Actually, we have 16 multimedia materials used in this class but Zimmer Twins are the main one that we do for each week. 2. Do you mean in slide 27? In week 1, I am going to introduce the Zimmer Twins website. In week 2, I will let them to familiar with the operation about this website. In week 3-8, we are going to create their won artificial. In week 9, we will ask the peers to leave the feedback to the peers. In week 10, we will ask the students to go back to check the feedback and revised them again. In week 11 and 12, we will ask students to add their won voice into their works. In the last week, 13, we will ask students to publish them on the YouTube to finish all this project. 3. On my research one, my research topic is that can multimedia material – “chosen website”…, it is limited in this chosen webiste. This is the case study in CYUT, and the case only can be used in this course and this material. It is an exploration. No one do this before. And it needs the follows to do it again and again to testify the result.

Explain from the researcher	4. Ok, thank you for your questions. Please let me explain for you. First, this is a case study, I am not talking about “ALL” multimedia material will increase student’s motivation. Please be noted that I said “multimedia material – chosen website” All my purpose is that I want to know whether the chosen website can arouse the learner’s learning motivation or not. If it successes, then it can offer e-teachers to have this tool to teach the students. On the other hand, if the website do not have the significant difference on motivation, the I can tell the e-teachers that the website is not suitable for e-learning. This is my research purpose in my field in the future. 5. I have asked the teachers and have read the books; they all said that if you want to test the relationship between 2 variables, you need to use correlation to know the degree of them. 6. I should explain more; however, because of time-limited, I need to skip them. And, actually, I have prepared many parts on methodology, I am worried that I will over time; therefore, I do not talk them in details. But, it’s very good for you to tell me this.
