How to Give a Successful Thesis Proposal Defense

*The thesis proposal defense should be a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes in length, so as to allow ample time for discussion within the one hour period.  A rough breakdown of the time allotment should be as follows:

         Introduction                            (3 minutes)

         Review of Literature                (5 minutes)

         Objectives                               (3 minutes)

         Methods                                  (9 minutes)

Note:

The discussion of methods should take up close to one half of your presentation time. It is here that faculty will be able to provide you with constructive feedback, as well as judge your readiness to conduct the project.

*The oral presentation

      - conciseness and clarity of the presentation

      - correct language

      - quality of the slides

      - answering of the questions

      - use of time

Criteria:

1.      Will the proposed research problem, if successfully carried out, be a significant contribution to this area of knowledge, deserving of an M.S. degree?

2.      Does the presentation give reasonable evidence that the student is familiar with significant literature in his/her field?

3.      Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

4.      Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

5.      Are the proposed statistical procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

Comments

For me, there is too much information to get into the point. Overall, the researcher is well prepared and ready.

To my dear Sadia:

Questions

What are the interview questions of the study? Furthermore, how will you analyze qualitative data fir your research?

Sadia, I have attached the interview questions on the proposed final defense at the last page.

I will first analyze the MSLQ questionnaire and then the check the interview questions to again verify my findings.

To my dear Irene:

Questions

What’s meaning of “oft-neglected” in slide 7?

This is the word that it shown on the paper. It means often-neglected. It is an Adj. and it means that it is the field that we are seldom focusing on it.

To my dear Paulinna:

Questions

1.      How many multimedia materials did you use in the class?

2.      What’s your course design?

3.      Do you think it is appropriate to use only one multimedia material in the study and you can answer RQ1?

1.     Actually, we have 16 multimedia materials used in this class but Zimmer Twins are the main one that we do for each week.

2.     Do you mean in slide 27? In week 1, I am going to introduce the Zimmer Twins website. In week 2, I will let them to familiar with the operation about this website. In week 3-8, we are going to create their won artificial. In week 9, we will ask the peers to leave the feedback to the peers. In week 10, we will ask the students to go back to check the feedback and revised them again. In week 11 and 12, we will ask students to add their won voice into their works. In the last week, 13, we will ask students to publish them on the YouTube to finish all this project.

3.     On my research one, my research topic is that can multimedia material – “chosen website”…, it is limited in this chosen webiste.

This is the case study in CYUT, and the case only can be used in this course and this material. It is an exploration. No one do this before. And it needs the follows to do it again and again to testify the result.

Answers from the audience

4.     Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

I’m not sure. Crystal choose imovie to be the multimedia material in class to test whether it can increase student’s motivation, however there are many kinds of multimedia material you cannot just use one of the multimedia material and said using multimedia material in teaching will increase student’ motivation.

5.     Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

I’m not sure.

6.     Are the proposed statistical procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

I suggest that crystal could explain more about the procedures in her study. (In class how many different kinds of multimedia material did you use? What’s the course design? )

Explain from the researcher

4. Ok, thank you for your questions. Please let me explain for you. First, this is a case study, I am not talking about “ALL” multimedia material will increase student’s motivation. Please be noted that I said “multimedia material – chosen website” All my purpose is that I want to know whether the chosen website can arouse the learner’s learning motivation or not. If it successes, then it can offer e-teachers to have this tool to teach the students. On the other hand, if the website do not have the significant difference on motivation, the I can tell the e-teachers that the website is not suitable for e-learning. This is my research purpose in my field in the future.

5. I have asked the teachers and have read the books; they all said that if you want to test the relationship between 2 variables, you need to use correlation to know the degree of them.

6. I should explain more; however, because of time-limited, I need to skip them. And, actually, I have prepared many parts on methodology, I am worried that I will over time; therefore, I do not talk them in details.

But, it’s very good for you to tell me this. I can understand that I should focus on this part more. Than you again, my dear Paulinna.

To my dear Leya:

Questions

In slide 21, you mentioned that you will collect 7 evidences to show that Zimmer Twins is popular. Have you found the evidences?

After I finished the research, we will know the result. The 7 evidences are the way that I want to collect to prove the findings. But, it is necessary for us to finish all the experimental research to find out the result.

Answers from the audience

Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

I think it is not appropriate enough because there is only one class as participants. There is no contrast group. How can we tell if students’ motivation is stimulated by this website instead of other variables?

Explain from the researcher

One group posttest only design is still one of the research method. Thought it is weak for it’s lacking of the control group; therefore, I am going to use 7 evidences to verify the result to solid my findings.
