How to Give a Successful Thesis Proposal Defense

*The thesis proposal defense should be a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes in length, so as to allow ample time for discussion within the one hour period.  A rough breakdown of the time allotment should be as follows:

         Introduction                            (3 minutes)

         Review of Literature                (5 minutes)

         Objectives                               (3 minutes)

         Methods                                  (9 minutes)

Note:

The discussion of methods should take up close to one half of your presentation time. It is here that faculty will be able to provide you with constructive feedback, as well as judge your readiness to conduct the project.

*The oral presentation

      - conciseness and clarity of the presentation

      - correct language

      - quality of the slides

      - answering of the questions

      - use of time

Criteria:

1.      Will the proposed research problem, if successfully carried out, be a significant contribution to this area of knowledge, deserving of an M.S. degree?

2.      Does the presentation give reasonable evidence that the student is familiar with significant literature in his/her field?

3.      Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

4.      Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

5.      Are the proposed statistical procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

6.      Is the oral presentation clear and professional?

Criteria:

1.   Will the proposed research problem, if successfully carried out, be a significant contribution to this area of knowledge, deserving of an M.S. degree?

Yes. The strategies of learning English have been the issue for the academic research.

2.   Does the presentation give reasonable evidence that the student is familiar with significant literature in his/her field?

Yes. Andrew provided a large number of information in the parts of introduction and literature review.

3.   Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

Due to the time limitation, Andrew did not mention the part of methodology, but I thought it is systematical from the handout of PPT.

4.   Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

I am not familiar with his methodology, but I thought it’s applicable.

5.   Are the proposed statistical procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

Yes. He will use descriptive statistical analysis, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlation to examine the data he collected.

6.   Is the oral presentation clear and professional?

conciseness and clarity of the presentation

It’s not clear to understand whole the presentation.

correct language

The volume is too small to hear.

quality of the slides

The words in the PPT are a little bit small.

answering of the questions

No time to ask question.

use of time

Overtime

Questions:

How do you choose these participants? Are they from the same school or class?

Comments/Suggestions

Because you focus the first two parts too much, you have no time to present the most important part, Methodology. Take care the time-control in next presentation.

1. Will the proposed research problem, if successfully carried out, be a significant contribution to this area of knowledge, deserving of an M.S. degree?

I’m not sure. Since the presenter didn’t clearly illustrate the gap of his research, he   still needs to reconsider the research problem. Way to go!

2. Does the presentation give reasonable evidence that the student is familiar with significant literature in his/her field?

Yes. However, some of literature doesn’t match with each other.

3. Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

I don’t think so. He didn’t explain how he divided the participants.

4. Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

Not exactly to provide a good data, because of the design and questionnaire is not consistent in his research.

5.  Are the proposed statistical procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

Yes, he presented in slide 24.

6. Is the oral presentation clear and professional?

- conciseness and clarity of the presentation

It seemed an unclear presentation.

- correct language

Quite good!

- quality of the slides

Not quite well! Lack of color choosing, format, words size and background. However, good animation.

- answering of the questions

Okay!

- use of time

No!

 Questions:

1.      Who are the experimental group or control group and how you divided them?

2.      Is there any strong evidence to support the school that you choose?

3.      Is this a quantitative research? If so, I don’t think the size of your sampling can convince the audience.

4.      Base on your research, which strategy you would apply in you class and why?

5.      What is “SILL” means in slide 21?

Comments/Suggestions

-Needs to speak louder and separate the words while you pronounce then it would better for us to understand!

- Lack of organization and time control!

- Looking good!

- Questionnaire needs to put page numbers and the title descriptions (1 to 5) still need to put on the top again.

- As you are going to explore students’ learning strategy using, but the questionnaire doesn’t show clearly direct relation. I don’t think this questionnaire could conduct a correct data on student’s strategy using.

1.      Will the proposed research problem, if successfully carried out, be a significant contribution to this area of knowledge, deserving of an M.S. degree?

First I was confusing about your topic “selected school”. And there are already many researchers studying in this field. In slide 6 you mentioned what is the situation of students’ learning strategy use? What do you mean “what is the situation”?

2.      Does the presentation give reasonable evidence that the student is familiar with significant literature in his/her field?

Yes. You provided a large number of information in the literature review. In slide 9 you should explain more fluently, slide 15 is not clear.

3.      Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

I have questions in your methodology.

1. There are only 15 participants in your study, I think you should have more than 30 participants.

2. You should explain your course design.

4. Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

I’m not sure. I suggest that you should find more research papers that related to your topic, try to find out how do others designed their study.

5.  Are the proposed statistical procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

I’m not sure. I think you should explain more in this part.

6. Is the oral presentation clear and professional?

- conciseness and clarity of the presentation

Not clear

- correct language

Needs to speak louder and more fluently

- quality of the slides

Not good

- answering of the questions

Good

- use of time

Did not finish

Questions:

1.      In slide 15 you choose some strategies to use in your study, but every student have different learning style how could you just choose 8 strategies to use in class?

Comments/Suggestions

1.      The participants in your study are the students in cram school, I don’t think it is appropriate to have the students in cram school as participants in a study.

2.      You should have a pre-test.

3.      The way you design for the experimental and control group is strange. The student in control group will not use any strategy in studying English?

4.      You should find more information about the methodology design.

5.      Your PPT does not have page number.

6.      You should control the use of time.

7.      You should organize your PPT design and your speech.

8.      Questionnaire needs to put page numbers.

Criteria:

1.  Will the proposed research problem, if successfully carried out, be a significant contribution to this area of knowledge, deserving of an M.S. degree?

I don’t see the significant contribution clearly in the presentation.

2.  Does the presentation give reasonable evidence that the student is familiar with significant literature in his/her field?

Yes, he showed several literature in slide 8-17.

3.  Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

Yes, I think experimental and control group may answer his research questions.

4.  Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

No, because for control group, it is not possible to have “a course without strategy instruction”. I think you need to think about it.

5.  Are the proposed statistical procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

I think yes because he uses three kinds of methods to analyze the data.

6.  Is the oral presentation clear and professional?

conciseness and clarity of the presentation

Questions:

You mentioned that you will use strategies in the experimental group. Which strategy you will use?

Comments/Suggestions

Voice is small.

PPT is not clear.

To Andrew:

1.      Will the proposed research problem, if successfully carried out, be a significant contribution to this area of knowledge, deserving of an M.S. degree?

A: Yes, students’ learning strategy use is an important issue in current filed of English education.

2.      Does the presentation give reasonable evidence that the student is familiar with significant literature in his/her field?

A: Yes. Andrew provides some literature review in this study; however, not enough.

3.      Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

A: Not really. I think it is necessary for him to do some revise in this part.

4.      Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

A: NO. It is impossible to have a class without any strategy instructions.

5.      Are the proposed procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

A: Yes. Andrew mentioned the procedures in slide 24. I think he used the right way to interpret the experimental data.

6.   Is the oral presentation clear and professional?

conciseness and clarity of the presentation

 Not really

correct language

Questions:

How are you going to control your participants? Is it possible for you to have a class without any learning strategy instruction?

To Andrew

Criteria:

1.      Will the proposed research problem, if successfully carried out, be a significant contribution to this area of knowledge, deserving of an M.S. degree?

You should tell you audience the statement of the problem related to your research

2.      Does the presentation give reasonable evidence that the student is familiar with significant literature in his/her field?

Maybe the presenter should work more in this part.

3.      Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

The presenter should explain it more.

4.      Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

I am not familiar with the research diagram he provided; I have no idea about this.

5.      Are the proposed statistical procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

No.

6.      Is the oral presentation clear and professional?

Could be better- conciseness and clarity of the presentation

      No problem- correct language

Too dark- quality of the slides

Good attitude- answering of the questions

Out of time- use of time

Questions: How do you persuade your customers (students) to participate your research?

Comments & Suggestion:

You should tell your audience the motivation of the research.

Criteria:

1.      Will the proposed research problem, if successfully carried out, be a significant contribution to this area of knowledge, deserving of an M.S. degree?

No, he doesn’t point out the research questions and purposes clearly. It is difficult to find out the significant contribution in this research.

2.      Does the presentation give reasonable evidence that the student is familiar with significant literature in his/her field?

The literature is not relevance to the research topic owing to he doesn’t show the gap to the research questions. Also, the topic should be narrow down into a specific topic.

3.      Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

The proposed method doesn’t bring out the valid result since the instrument is not appropriate in this study.

4.      Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

The research design should be rethinking, there are a lot of problems to carry out the result to the research problems.

5.      Are the proposed statistical procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

The procedures should be explained in details.

6.      Is the oral presentation clear and professional?

        - conciseness and clarity of the presentation

It is hard to understand the content of his presentation.

        - correct language

    Fine.

        - quality of the slides

    The PPT should be reorganized.

        - answering of the questions

   Need to be improved.

        - use of time

   Out of time.

Questions:

1. What are you planned to do for conducting the formal study? Can you explain the course design?

2. In the questionnaire, you listed 師德檢定 and GEPT in comparison, are there any relevance to these two different kinds of exam? In my point of view, it makes no sense to compare these two different kinds of exam. (師德 is for children who are under 12) However, the junior high school students are chosen as the participants. Can you explain why do you chose 師德 as your instrument?

Comments/Suggestions

1.      The presentation should be organized, you spent too much time to explain the things which were not relevance to your research questions.

2.      It would be better to list the descriptions of how to fill in the questionnaire in each page. (5-likert scale)

For Andrew

Criteria:

1.  Will the proposed research problem, if successfully carried out, be a significant contribution to this area of knowledge, deserving of an M.S. degree?

Yes. Learning strategy is an important and interesting issue needed to be deeply research.

2.  Does the presentation give reasonable evidence that the student is familiar with significant literature in his/her field?

Yes. He divided several parts to introduce his literature review.

3.  Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

I am not sure. The age of the participants of the two groups is not the same (why the age of group A is 13-15 and group is 15?) and it seem the participant numbers are not enough for a quantitative research.

4.  Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

I don’t think the GEPT basic level test is suitable for the first- or second-grade junior high students. Maybe the third-grade students are OK. If the researcher takes the test grade as the data collection, will that be proper for the study?

5.  Are the proposed statistical procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

Yes. He will utilize three kinds of data analysis.

6.      Is the oral presentation clear and professional?

Conciseness and clarity of the presentation- Fine

Correct language- Good

Quality of the slides-The words should be bigger

Answering of the questions –Good

Use of time-Totally out of control

Questions:

Why the duration will be 10 weeks? Why not a semester?

Comments/Suggestions

Handsome shirt

Comfortable pronunciation

Confident

PPT design should be more attractive

For Andrew

1.      Will the proposed research problem, if successfully carried out, be a significant contribution to this area of knowledge, deserving of an M.S. degree?

Yes, the proposed research could be a significant contribution to the English teaching area. But the name of the research may be reconsidered to consistent with his participants.

2.      Does the presentation give reasonable evidence that the student is familiar with significant literature in his/her field?

The literature review section has space to improve.

3.      Are the proposed methods adequate to provide valid experimental data?

The choice of the participants needs more explanation to make the research more convinced.

4.      Will the proposed experimental design provide valid data applicable to the proposed research problem?

There should be more clear explanations of what are the different instructions between the control group and experimental group.

5.      Are the proposed statistical procedures adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data?

Yes, the proposed statistical design procedures are adequate to provide valid interpretation of experimental data.

6.      Is the oral presentation clear and professional? Need more efforts

      - conciseness and clarity of the presentation-

      - correct language- clear and fluent

      - answering of the questions- need more specify

      - use of time- over time

Question

Is the number of the participants enough for the research?

Comments

The words of the PPT could be bigger because I can’t easily see the words.

Answers to Questions & Thanks for Comments:

If the following answers are not clear or enough to solve your doubts, I will keep working on my research. Thanks for your comments.

To Jeffrey’s

First, this is a cram school, that students divided into ClassA and Class B is based on the time they came to class. Second, on accounts of the Style Jet Test, Level 4 and 6 were respectively passed by Class B and Class A.

To Irene’s

1. First, this is a cram school, that students divided into ClassA and Class B is based on the time they came to class. Second, on accounts of the Style Jet Test, Level 4 and 6 were respectively passed by Class B and Class A. Last, Class A is the experimental group.
2. The classroom observation method based on the action research can be applied to this case.
3. This is a mixed research, both quantitative and qualitative.
4. There are plenty of researched about the instruction of learning strategies, but few of them were applied to teach. Thus, the strategy instruction method will be taught in Class A.

To Paulinna’s

It is based on Lan’s research design in 2007, and I want to apply it to see its real effects on students’ learning.

To Leya’s

Learning is not some kind of strategy but a process of awareness of all the useful strategies.

To York’s

This research is going to arouse the awareness of the learning

strategy use in Class A but not in Class B. There is nothing to do

with the quality of teaching.

To Sadia’s

A goal of a higher level of GEPT.

To Patty’s

1.      It is based on Lan’s research design in 2007

2.      Style Jet is not only for students under 12 but for those who are under 17.

To 婉菁’s

Based on the rules of cram schools, a period of students’ pay will be three months, about 10 weeks excluding the weekends.

To Betty’s

Not really. So, it needs the qualitative method to support.

Dear Andrew,

Yes, you're right1

Your explanations are not clear.
